New Self-Service Payment Terminal

There's a new self-service payment terminal upstairs, next to the printer. You can now pay by card whenever you're in the space, with no need to wait for a director or rummage for cash.

The new self-service terminal

How it Works

The touchscreen runs our own software on a Raspberry Pi, and a local web server handles the backend with SumUp managing the payments. When you check out, the total is sent to SumUp's Cloud API, which takes the payment on the card reader. This means we can design the checkout however we like, while your card details stay with SumUp's secure payment system and never pass through our software.

Why SumUp?

We chose SumUp because it is the only provider that offers this level of integration with their off-the-shelf payment terminals. All other providers require their own point-of-sale systems, or a human to manually type the amount in manually.

We think this could be useful for other Hackspaces to implement to take payments without directors present, we are planning to release source code at a later date. Please get in contact if you are interested.

If you have any problems or ideas for the terminal, let us know on the WhatsApp or have a word with a director.
